Northwood Deaconess Health Center's (NDHC) chief medical officer, Dr. Erika Stein, has been named the 2026 Outstanding Rural Health Provider by the Dakota Conference on Rural Health.
The award, given to a healthcare provider who practices in rural North Dakota and is unselfishly committed to improving the health of their community and service area, will be presented at an awards banquet June 3.
Stein has been with NDHC since 2020. She leads NDHC's medical provider team and cares for patients in both clinic and hospital settings.
"I am honored and humbled to be selected as an outstanding rural provider," Stein said. "I am incredibly grateful and fortunate to work with an amazing team at NDHC every day. We consistently strive for excellence and positive patient experiences."
FNP-C Lizz Sandberg says Stein is a conscientious physician who is an advocate for her patients and coworkers, and for access to high-quality rural healthcare. “She is a model of leadership and enthusiasm for rural physicians,” she said.
In addition to her leadership at NDHC, the Langdon, N.D. native regularly mentors medical students from the UND School of Medicine & Health Sciences, where she was recognized as the 2023 Preceptor of the Year and recently received student recognition for the impact she has on their education and clinical experiences.
"Practicing in rural North Dakota and serving our region is an honor. I am so proud to be part of this rewarding and impactful work and am dedicated to growing our medical services while providing patient-centered care," Stein said.
"Dr. Stein embodies what it means to be an outstanding rural healthcare provider," said NDHC CEO Brock Sherva. "Her care and compassion for others is unmatched. She has made a lasting impact on our patients and organization and throughout the state and rural health landscape."
