Rehab Services

  • The Rehab Services department has a staff of 12 offering  Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Outpatient Cardiac Rehab and Restorative Aide services. The department also offers Speech Therapy services through a contract with Altru Health System.  All services are offered 5 days per week with on-call services available on weekends and holidays. 
  • Therapy services are offered to residents in the nursing home, hospital, special care unit, to outpatients, to home health patients and to area schools for children with learning related difficulties.
  • The Rehab Services department also has a Certified Athletic Trainer who provides training services to the Hatton/Northwood Public School   
  •  Started in 1997.  Cardiac Rehab Program which includes Phase II and Phase III intervention.  Phase II involves intense telemetry monitoring with an ACLS certified RN and a Therapist for exercise prescription.   Phase III is a maintenance program monitored by an RN.
  • The Rehab Services department continues to provide services in Home Health through a contractual relationship with Turtle River Home Care  in Northwood,  and the surrounding communities of Larimore, Hatton, Arvilla, Inkster, Aneta, Grand Forks, East Grand Forks, MN. 
  • The Rehab department provides Occupational Therapy services to area schools through a contract with Upper Valley Special Education.
  • In 2008 the Rehab Department began providing Physical Therapy services to area schools through a contract with Griggs-Steele-Traill Multidistrict, a special education unit, serving Hatton, Northwood, Mayville, Portland, Central Valley, Hilsboro, Cooperstown and Finley schools.
  • NDHC employs an Occupational Therapist specialized in evaluation and treatment of children with learning and behavior problems.  She provides these services for families throughout the region, northwestern Minnesota, and all of North Dakota. 
    She is one of three therapists in the state who offer these services.  Families travel to Northwood for services. 
  • The Rehab Services dept continues to offer a summer Sports Enhancement Program  for area athletes.  The equipment, purchased largely through a CAH grant, is loaned to the local school for athletes to use the remainder of the year.   This program not only provides intense training to enhance performance, but is designed to develop greater joint stability to aide in prevention of injury.
  • In 2008 The Rehab Services department also began offering Athletic Training services through a contract with the Hatton Northwood Activities Co-op.  Our Physical Therapist, who is also a Certified Athletic Trainer provides weekly visits to the school to follow and treat sports injuries.  NDHC also offers a free screening for students injured during the week, attends and provides training services for all home football games, and has provided a weigh-in and body fat composition clinic for area wrestlers from schools in the region.  NDHC’s ambulance was also on site for all home football games. 
  • An Occupational Therapist from the Rehab Services dept offers ergonomic evaluations and job site evaluations to local employers to aid in preventing job related musculoskeletal injuries, or repetitive use syndromes.     
  • Restorative Aide services are provided to nursing home residents who are at risk of losing strength, range of motion and function due to illness, the aging process or inactivity.   The exercise program is designed by a therapist, but carried out daily by one of four aides that are employed in this department.  It may involve exercise, walking, or both.   There is an exercise group, or an exercise room in LTC for individual programs.  
  • The Community Fitness Center has  served 201 members from Northwood and the surrounding communities of Hatton and Larimore over the past year.  NDHC employees enjoy free membership as an employee benefit, while VCHC employees can join for a reduced membership fee.  Individuals who volunteer at NDHC also receive a free membership. 

Wellness programs are held throughout the year and are available to employees and community members 

    1. “Lets Get Physical” is an exercise incentive held after the holidays.  Around 60 people participate each year.
    2. Old Fashioned Saturday “Fitness Walk/Run” is a community event held in conjunction with the Northwood community celebration.  It is free and open to the public. 
    3. Free fitness center memberships and/or wellness items such as weights, pedometers, exercise balls, etc are given as donations to local groups for  their fundraising efforts.  Fitness related door prizes are also given at our wellness events described above.

We provide therapy for our hospital and swingbed patients, residents of the nursing home, area schools, home health patients, as well as outpatients from the surrounding region.   Our Cardiac Rehab program is staffed with an RN with ACLS certification and a Physical or Occupational Therapist for individuals with heart conditions, surgery or related procedures.

Our skilled therapists have specialty certifications in many areas, including, pediatric learning and behavior problems, strength and conditioning, hand injuries;  fabrication of orthotics; lymphedema treatment and neurodevelopmental treatment (NDT)

We have a Sports Medicine program in which we work closely with our primary care physicians, orthopedic surgeons, and area school’s coaches and trainers to facilitate rapid recovery from athletic injuries. 

We offer Athletic Training services to the Hatton/Northwood Public School covering all home football games and weekly follow-up at each school for screenings and treatment.      

The rehab dept employs 13 very professional yet down-to-earth staff to provide these services.  We work closely with our local providers at Valley Community Health Centers and with regional centers like Altru Meritcare, and Innovis.
